Ishara Kenya is an Ultra-Luxury Safari Trapped Between Wild Nature and Fine Polish (Ryan Walker Review)
Watch on YouTubeI stayed at Ishara Kenya. Not only is this an ultra-luxury safari experience, it's often noted as the very best and highest-end stay here in Kenya. With an incredible 5:1 staff-to-guest ratio, I wanted to explore what makes this property so special and give it my full review.
I travel around the world and review the very best hotels out of 50 points in five core categories with four tests and dozens of criteria points. I break it down into five categories: the Ambiance, the Room, the Dining, the Service, and the It-Factor. I am not associated with or sponsored by the hotel; I paid full price as an independent guest. For this specific review, I also set out on a side mission: to track down five of Africa's most impressive big game animals that surround the property. Right out of the gate, we checked off number one by spotting a pair of zebras standing side-by-side. It was off to a pretty good start.
Ambiance
To help guests capture their journey, Ishara features a full, on-property photography studio with an exclusive Canon cameras partnership, the only one of its kind in the Masai Mara. Included in your stay is a dedicated photographer, a custom safari photo session, full use of their top-tier gear and professional editing. I used their Canon gear to shoot the entire filmed version of this review to put that quality on display.
The property features a main public pool that is incredibly quiet and serene. At night, it transforms with a Rolls-Royce-esque starry lit floor that is genuinely breathtaking.
While the pool is beautiful, it feels slightly sparse. The choice of poolside bean bag chairs feels a bit odd, there is no background music, and a lack of poolside staff presence means it misses out on a lively, social energy. There is a missed opportunity to make this space feel more dynamic.
For wellness, the property hosts the Aya Spa. While treatments are an additional fee, they offer unique experiences like a Himalayan salt bed body scrub and the $350 Chai Indulgence soak and scrub, which left my skin incredibly smooth.
The gym at Ishara is totally unique: a treehouse structure completely surrounded by nature. It features sustainable, dark wood and metal NOHRD equipment alongside Matrix machines.
However, because it is an open-air tent immersed in nature, the lack of fans or air conditioning means it gets incredibly hot, easily reaching 80°F to 100°F. And some of the sustainable gear was showing wear; during my workout, the fin on the water-rower was broken and the water inside looked quite dirty.
Ishara operates with a deep ethos of sustainability. They grow vegetables in an on-site aeroponic garden, plant trees every single day, and didn't cut down a single tree to build the camp. Because they let nature run wild, the walkways are made of loose, dry reclaimed wood rather than a smooth, lacquered finish. If you prefer a highly manicured, polished luxury layout, this raw aesthetic might not be your preference, but it is deeply sustainable.
The Ambiance score also factors in a second included daily game drive. The custom safari cars are remarkably equipped with a Nespresso machine (the first of its kind in the area) and Canon binoculars. During our drive, we successfully checked off animal number two: a family of elephants. Guests can also book a "star bed" experience to sleep completely unplugged under the night sky, featuring a heated mattress topper and a hot water bottle (though my night was unfortunately cut short by a rainout). Finally, the property features a Nordic Spa equipped with a dry sauna, a jacuzzi, and a fantastic cold plunge.
Ambiance Score: 8 / 10
The Room
Ishara features 10 total suites, but the room keys are entirely nonexistent. The tented suites have no outside locks on the doors. While the staff and environment are completely trustworthy, leaving your Room unlocked for anyone to enter can feel slightly unnerving if you prefer total control over your space.
Inside, the river suite is aesthetically stunning, offering uninterrupted views of the river and local wildlife. The minibar is fully included and restocked daily, alongside a Smeg kettle and a large Nespresso machine that froths fresh milk. The walls of the Room are constructed from heavy tarps and netting. The positive is that you get a beautifully fresh breeze and a fully immersive soundscape of hippos and lions at night. The negative is that you feel every shift in the weather and temperature.
The Shower Test
Before testing the shower, the bathroom offers a massive dual vanity with a large standing mirror. The shower area itself is evaluated on our three standard criteria:
- Size: Extraordinary. It is massive, though it lacks a built-in bench or seating area.
- Ease of Use: Excellent. A simple pull dial controls the water flow, and twisting left or right adjusts the temperature perfectly.
- Pressure: Fantastic. The water pressure is flawless, with zero clogged nozzles, falling cleanly through luxurious wooden slats instead of a standard drain. It easily rivals some of the best showers on the channel.
(Note: For travelers seeking the ultimate upgrade, Ishara offers a sprawling Villa Suite that can command up to $12,500 per night during the Great Migration. It essentially connects two full suites with a central lounge, a stocked Smeg fridge, a private fire pit, and a massive, climate-controlled infinity plunge pool where we spotted our third animal: hippos wallowing in the river directly below.)
The evening turndown service is exceptionally thoughtful, featuring dimmed lighting, a custom note, and a hand-carved wicker animal box to take home.
Despite the beauty of the Room, several core creature comforts were missing. There are no power outlets next to the bed, meaning you can't charge your phone within arms reach. More importantly, there is no air conditioning. While a fan is provided, it does little to mitigate the heat. This lack of climate control led to a massive, uncomfortable temperature swing: I spent the first half of the night sweating, but because the staff forgot to lower one of the exterior window rollers, the Room became incredibly frigid and windy by 3:00 AM.
Room Score: 7.5 / 10
Dining
Dining at Ishara is defined by an open-ended culinary policy: the chef can customize and create virtually anything a guest desires, provided they have the ingredients on hand.
Breakfast features a beautiful continental selection including colorful Greek yogurt topped with local tropical fruits. The standout is a spicy shakshuka served with naan bread and perfectly cooked over-easy eggs. Ishara also features a ceremonial-grade matcha tea sourced directly from Japan and prepared traditionally with a bamboo whisk.
Lunch is served out in the Shamba (the property's garden) with a menu that changes daily. To put the kitchen's customization promise to the test, I placed a last-minute off-menu order for an Asian yellow coconut curry. Despite a bit of initial hesitation from the staff, they executed it flawlessly, delivering a highly impressive curry on short notice.
For coffee and tea, there is a curated tasting showcasing a perfectly steeped butterfly pea flower jasmine tea and premium, locally sourced Kenyan black coffee beans. (Right after our coffee tasting, we checked off another animal: a giraffe casually strolling past the property.)
Dinner is set up romantically under the stars by the main fire pit. The three-course meal began with a phenomenal butternut squash and ginger soup topped with a chili foam and crunchy pumpkin seeds. The main course featured elevated, traditional Kenyan flavors: kachumbari (a vibrant tomato and onion salad), chapati flatbread, and ugali (a traditional corn-based starch) paired with a green Thai chicken curry. The meal concluded with a spectacular deconstructed tiramisu where fresh espresso is poured directly over the pastry.
While the ability to customize your entire menu daily is fantastic and automatically elevates the Dining experience, the individual dishes themselves, while excellent for a safari camp, aren't quite as uniquely memorable or artistically avant-garde as the Michelin-starred Dining concepts found at other ultra-luxury resorts worldwide.
Dining Score: 8.5 / 10
Service
The Service team at Ishara is filled with some of the kindest, warmest people I have met in my travels, reflecting the incredible hospitality of Kenya.
The Room Service Breakfast Test
Our room service breakfast test evaluates accuracy, temperature, and timing. I ordered black coffee and an eggs benedict to check the doneness of the yolk. The waiter arrived at 7:05 AM, making it five minutes late. However, the food itself was immaculate: the bacon slabs were thick, the coffee was hot and fresh, and the eggs benedict featured the runniest, most perfectly poached yolk I've seen on the channel so far.
The Service Test
To truly push the boundaries of their logistical capability, I issued an incredibly difficult, last-minute Service Test. I called the front desk and asked if they could arrange a hot air balloon safari for the very next morning.
The turnaround was remarkably impressive. Within minutes, the reception team cleared availability and fully booked the flight. The next morning, we were floating above the Savannah, completing our wildlife mission by spotting our fifth and final animal: a magnificent pride of lions resting down below near a herd of buffalo.
While the big moments were handled beautifully, the property is still working through a few early-stage operational kinks. During my nighttime room service order, the automated service extension line went entirely dead and failed to connect. When the team finally called me back, the line was abruptly disconnected again before I could finish ordering. Additionally, on a separate night, the staff delivered my appetizer but took an odd 45 minutes to return with the main entree. These minor pacing errors are common for a younger hotel, but are worth noting at this price tier.
Service Score: 8 / 10
It-Factor
The location of Ishara is entirely unbeatable. It sits directly in the beating heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve, completely embedded in the wildlife action. Animals literally walk right up to the camp boundaries.
What sets Ishara apart is how it has single-handedly redefined the blueprint for ultra-luxury tented camps in the region. From a financial perspective, a stay here is an undeniable splurge, but the value returned for your nightly rate is exceptional. Because your booking includes unlimited custom game drives for as long as you want, full fine dining customization, high-end photography gear, and complete spa access, the value equation is easily justified. If you want to completely immerse yourself in the magic of Africa without compromising on luxury, Ishara is absolutely worth the price tag.
It-Factor Score: 10 / 10
The Final Verdict
Ishara Kenya is a triumph of immersive travel and a truly life-changing safari experience. While it suffers from minor operational pacing issues and the open-air design leaves you vulnerable to dramatic nighttime temperature shifts, the sheer ambition of the property is undeniable. With a flawless wildlife location, unparalleled luxury inclusions, and a service team that successfully booked a last-minute hot air balloon ride on a whim, it easily stands as an exceptional destination.
Taking all of our categories into account, the Ishara Kenya earns a highly impressive final score of 42 out of 50. It is a property I could not recommend more highly for your next African adventure.
